Radiotherapy and Meningioma
نویسندگان
چکیده
Although meningioma is the most common primary brain tumour no strict consensus exists on the exact role of radiotherapy due to the lack of controlled phase-III studies. In completely resected grade-I tumours, radiotherapy is usually deferred until possible recurrence. For grade-II–III tumours, the issue is more controversial and radiotherapy is occasionally applied already in the primary setting. The development in radiotherapy, including fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy as well as radiosurgery and irradiation with protons and carbon ions, has given new possibilities to deliver irradiation with reduced effects on the unaffected brain. However, well-performed randomised studies are still warranted, evaluating both efficacy and aspects of shortand long-term quality of life for patients before the real value of radiotherapy can be determined. Abstract Background Histologically confirmed meningiomas in first year of life are quite rare. However, review of the sporadic cases in the literature reported meningioma in infants. Those have unique features in common. Case presentation An 11 month-old Iranian male infant presented with a several weeks history of decrease in movement of his right sided upper and lower extremities. Brai...
متن کاملAtypical and anaplastic meningiomas: prognostic implications of clinicopathological features.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate patient outcome and investigate the prognostic factors of high-grade meningiomas by adopting the 2000 World Health Organization (WHO) classification system. METHODS Between 1986 and 2004, 74 patients were diagnosed with high-grade meningioma: 33 with atypical and 41 with anaplastic meningioma. The mean follow-up was 58.5 months. We reclassified all surgical specimens, a...
متن کاملLinac-based stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery in patients with meningioma
BACKGROUND It was our purpose to analyze long-term clinical outcome and to identify prognostic factors after Linac-based fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (Linac-based FSRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with intracranial meningiomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between 10/1995 and 03/2009, 297 patients with a median age of 59 years were treated with FSRT for intracranial men...
متن کاملIntracranial subfrontal schwannoma treated with surgery and 3D conformal radiotherapy.
Subfrontal schwannoma not arising from the cranial nerves are rare tumors. A 19-year-old man presented with a large subfrontal extra-axial enhancing mass with a preoperative diagnosis of skull base meningioma. A subtotal resection of the tumor mass was carried out. Microscopic examination revealed it to be a schwannoma. The residual tumor was treated with fractionated three-dimensional conforma...
